What is patina?

Zinc, copper and brass are known as living metals and will age over time, this is called “patina”. We offer beautiful pre-patina treatments to give an artistic look to your range hood. Check them out below!

Zinc, copper and brass properties

Zinc is known as a living metal and is known to change over time. We like to say that zinc is a very rustic metal and will show the properties that come with handmade work. It will often vary in hue color and transparency throughout the range hood. A benefit to zinc is that it is not a shiny, factory finish, which makes it unique to other range hoods.

Patina Treatments

Left untreated, these metals shows that of a brushed grey/silver finish. We offer a few different patina treatments that turn the zinc into various dark colors. These colors vary from light black hues to brown hues. Patinas can vary in difference from hood to hood. Don’t worry, we will walk with you with pictures and tweaking to get you a patina you will love.

Basic Care & Handling

Hood Install

We Highly recommend that when handling your zinc hood you wear gloves as the zinc will react to fingerprints. Please place a blanket or towels down to prepare your range hood for mounting. If you are installing on your own don’t hesitate to call with questions

Zinc Cleaning

It is imperative that you do not use abrasives or solvents to clean your zinc hood. This can interrupt the hood patina. The best cleaning solution is a dry cloth and light soap and water. When done cleaning, make sure the hood is dry of any water.

Wax Finish

We treat all of our hoods with a wax finish to preserve the patina overtime. The wax will provide some protection to your hood overtime and be easier to clean. It is recommended that you re-treat your range hood every 6 months to a year to continue to protect the zinc patina. You can do this with gloves and a dry cloth. Although, if you like the natural patina zinc creates overtime, you can leave untreated. Zinc is very neat in this way.
